Cops and Robbers

Adien McAlly was doing his best to look very, very interested in his tea. It wasn’t that there was anything at all different about this cup of tea then the thousands of other cups of tea he had consumed in the last twenty-seven years of his life, it was just that this particular cup was a good way to ignore his sister. It would have been even better if Columbine actually bought it.

“Adien, are you even listening to me?” she snapped at him, one black heel tapping on the wine colored carpet of the parlor.

“Mmm,” said Adien noncommittally. Some sisters grew out of bossing around their little brothers, he thought bitterly. Columbine, however, hadn’t. He should never have gone into the family business. Being ordered around by his small, high-pitched, short tempered sibling was not Adien’s idea of a good time.

“Adien!” Columbine yanked the tea out of his hands. “ Pay attention!”

“Ah, bugger off, Columbine,” Adien snarled.

“You lucky bastard,” drawled Fox O’Dell from his station at the corner of the mantel. “I wish I could talk to the Queen of the Criminal Underworld like that. She could have you killed, you know.”

“By who?” Adien asked petulantly, wishing he had his tea back. “Who would she send after me apart from her best hit man? Even Columbine McAlly can’t force me to shoot myself in the head, Fox.”

“Would you put money down on that?”

“Both of you!” Columbine’s voice was strained. “Grow up for one bloody minute! And don’t talk about me like I’m not here!”
